Mammo Party makes it easier for first-time mammograms

BSA Harrington Breast Center recently held its annual Mammo Party, a community event that emphasizes the importance for women 40 years and older to get an annual mammogram. Participants received a mammogram and enjoyed some fun festivities, goody bags, scrumptious treats and a drawing for door prizes.

Assistant District Attorney of Randall County and Amarillo resident Tracie Reilly found it very easy to sign up for the Mammo Party. “I just clicked the event notice on Facebook and registered,” she said. “They called me later, and we scheduled the time for my mammogram.”

A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast, which doctors use to look for early signs of breast cancer. Regular mammograms can detect signs of breast cancer up to 3 years before someone feels a lump.

Reilly said that scheduling her first mammogram was something she kept putting off. “I’m 50 years old, and I’ve never had a mammogram,” said Reilly.

“I know how important they are, and I’ve never been afraid of them; it’s just that life gets really busy. I have 4 children and work full time. With everything going on, moms like me don’t prioritize our own health. We put things like this on the back burner.”

The community event made it easy for Reilly and others to get their annual mammograms.

“They held the Mammo Party on a Saturday, so I was free to go to the event without taking off from work or interfering with activities with my children,” said Reilly.

“The event was amazing. Everything from the scheduling to the person who checked me in to the person who led me to the changing room. The staff was informative, friendly, and happy to explain things.”

Having connected with the BSA Harrington Breast Center, Reilly now has a MyChart account and can easily schedule next year’s mammogram. “I’m already in touch with their genetic counselor to see about genetic testing as well,” said Reilly.
